A refined residential address shaped by detail, light and enduring design.
Sierra Hawthorn is a mixed-use residential development located on Burwood Road in Melbourne’s inner eastern surburb of Hawthorn. Comprising a significant apartment offering with integrated retail and resident amenities, the project delivers a contemporary urban living environment within one of Melbourne’s most established suburbs.
MAP Architects were engaged post-permit to refine and deliver the approved scheme, enhancing buildability, livability and long-term performance while maintaining the integrity of the original design vision.
Our Role
MAP Architects led the design refinement, documentation and delivery of the project following planning approval.
Working within an established design framework, the project was carefully reworked to optimise apartment layouts, improve internal amenity and support efficient construction outcomes. Material selections and detailing were refined to prioritise durability, simplicity and long-term maintenance.
The project demonstrates MAP Architects’ strength in taking approved developments and elevating them through considered architectural resolution and delivery expertise.
Collaboration
Delivered during a period of significant disruption, construction progressed under COVID-19 restrictions, requiring an adaptive and highly coordinated project approach. Close collaboration between the architect, builder and consultant team was critical to maintaining project momentum. Through clear communication and agile problem-solving, the project was successfully delivered over a three-year period while maintaining a strong focus on design quality.
Design Approach
The design is anchored by a series of open-plan apartments that prioritise access to natural light, ventilation and landscape outlook. Generous internal layouts are complemented by strong connections to external spaces, creating a balanced and highly livable residential environment.
Landscape is integrated into the built form through internal voids and courtyard spaces, softening the development and reinforcing a connection to Hawthorn’s established leafy character.
Materiality plays a key role in defining the building’s identity, with a palette selected for longevity, tactility and low maintenance. The result is a refined architectural outcome that balances design ambition with practical performance.
